Automating bills and savings around your pay schedule

Once you know which paycheck covers which bills -- from the Budgeting course -- you can automate almost all of it, which removes the biggest source of budget failure: forgetting or a late manual transfer. Set bill due dates and autopay, where offered, to land a day or two after the paycheck that's meant to cover them, never before. For savings, automate a transfer for the same day your paycheck lands, before you've had a chance to spend it -- "pay yourself first" isn't a cliché here, it's the entire mechanism. Even a small fixed amount, moved automatically every payday, builds faster than a "whatever's left over" approach that usually leaves nothing. If your pay date shifts around holidays or weekends, check that your automations shift with it -- a bill scheduled for the 1st that lands on a Saturday and a paycheck that arrives the following Monday is exactly the kind of one-day gap that causes an overdraft.
